The first-generation 5.0L Coyote (2011–2014) marked Ford's return to a high-revving V8 in the Mustang. It replaced the 4.6L Modular and brought DOHC technology and Ti-VCT variable cam timing to the platform.
GEN 1 COYOTE SPECIFICATIONS (2011–2014): Displacement: 5.0L (302 ci) Configuration: V8, DOHC (dual overhead cam), 4 valves per cylinder Block material: Aluminum Head material: Aluminum Fuel system: Port injection Bore: 3.630" Stroke: 3.650" Compression ratio: 11.0:1 Horsepower: 412 hp (2013–2014 Mustang GT) / 360 hp (2011–2012 Mustang GT) / 360 hp (F-150) Torque: 390 lb-ft Crankshaft: Cast iron (Gen 1 only) Cam system: Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing) on both intake and exhaust
APPLICATIONS: • 2011–2014 Ford Mustang GT • 2011–2014 Ford F-150
KEY NOTES: • The cast iron crankshaft is the most important distinguishing feature of Gen 1. Gen 2 and Gen 3 Coyotes use a forged steel crankshaft. • Ti-VCT adjusts cam timing independently on both the intake and exhaust cams, improving both low-end torque and high-RPM power. • Gen 1 Coyotes are port injection only — no direct injection, unlike the Gen 3. • If you're doing an engine swap with a Gen 1 Coyote, be aware that the accessory drive and intake manifold orientation may differ from later generations.
