Can I use an older Mopar automatic with a Gen 3 Hemi?

Text size

The Gen 3 Hemi (5.7L, 6.1L, 6.4L) uses different bellhousing bolt patterns depending on the application and year. This means older Mopar automatics require careful evaluation — and often an adapter — before they can be used with a Hemi.

GEN 3 HEMI TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS:

Older Gen 3 Hemi applications (2003–approximately 2008) use transmissions from the 46RE/47RE/48RE family in truck applications, and the 45RFE/545RFE in car/SUV applications. The bellhousing bolt pattern in these applications is specific to the engine/transmission combination.

Newer Gen 3 Hemi applications use: • 545RFE (5-speed electronic, car and truck) • 65RFE (6-speed electronic, Ram trucks 2012+) • NAG1 / W5A580 (Mercedes-sourced 5-speed automatic, used in SRT and sports car applications)

CAN YOU USE AN OLDER 727 OR 904 TORQUEFLITE? The classic 727 and 904 Torqueflite transmissions use a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the Gen 3 Hemi. These transmissions were designed for the older LA-series and B/RB-series Mopar engines. To mate a 727 or 904 to a Gen 3 Hemi, you need a custom bellhousing adapter. These adapters are available from several Mopar performance suppliers.

BEFORE ORDERING: Confirm the following: 1. The exact year and model of your vehicle 2. Which Gen 3 Hemi you have (5.7L, 6.1L, or 6.4L) 3. Which transmission you are attempting to use
