Chrysler 3-Speed Automatic Transmission Dimensions

Text size

The 727 and 904 Torqueflite transmissions are Chrysler's most well-known 3-speed automatics. Both are known for their durability and are still widely used in restoration and performance builds.

727 TORQUEFLITE (A727): Configuration: 3-speed automatic Overall length: ~28" Input shaft: 23-spline Weight: ~165 lbs Applications: 1960s–1980s Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth cars and trucks with B/RB big-block and 440 engines; also used behind the 383, some 318/360 applications, and early small-block applications in heavy-duty configurations Strengths: The 727 is one of the strongest 3-speed automatics ever made. It was used behind the 426 Hemi in factory applications and can handle serious power levels.

904 TORQUEFLITE (A904): Configuration: 3-speed automatic Overall length: ~26" Input shaft: 23-spline Weight: ~130 lbs Applications: Smaller-engine Mopar cars from the 1960s through 1980s — slant-six, 318, 273, and some 340 applications Note: The 904 is the light-duty sibling of the 727. It shares the same basic design but is smaller and rated for lower torque. Do not use a 904 behind a high-torque engine.

727 VS. 904 IDENTIFICATION: • The 727 is noticeably larger and heavier • Both use 23-spline input shafts, so spline count alone won't differentiate them • Look at the pan shape — the 727 pan is larger • Check casting numbers on the case for definitive ID
