GM 2-Speed Automatic Transmission Dimensions

Text size

The Powerglide is GM's 2-speed automatic transmission and one of the most recognizable transmissions in American automotive history. Despite its simplicity, it has remained popular in racing applications for decades.

POWERGLIDE SPECIFICATIONS: Configuration: 2-speed automatic Overall length: ~25" Bell height: 6.375" Input shaft: 27-spline (most applications; some early versions differ) Output shaft: 27-spline Weight: ~90 lbs (aluminum case) Production years: 1962–1973 (in passenger cars; continued in some truck/industrial use)

APPLICATIONS: • 1962–1973 Chevrolet passenger cars (Chevelle, Camaro, Impala, Nova, and others) • Various small-block Chevy applications from the era

WHY THE POWERGLIDE IS STILL POPULAR: • The 2-speed design is extremely simple — fewer parts means less weight and less parasitic power loss • In drag racing, there are only two gears to shift — launch in low, shift to high, cross the finish line • With the right converter and tuning, a Powerglide can be a very fast drag racing transmission • Aftermarket support is extensive — replacement parts, upgraded internals, and race-spec versions are widely available

Note: The aluminum-case Powerglide (1962+) is much lighter than the earlier cast-iron version and is the one most commonly referenced in performance applications.
