What is a VIN number and why do I need it?

A VIN — Vehicle Identification Number — is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle when it's manufactured. It's essentially your vehicle's fingerprint.

Your VIN encodes important specifications, including:

  • Year, make, and model
  • Engine type and size
  • Drivetrain and transmission configuration
  • Country of manufacture and plant of assembly

Why does it matter for your order? Engines and transmissions must match your vehicle's exact configuration. Some model years have multiple engine or transmission options, and the wrong match can mean a part that doesn't fit or function correctly. Your VIN removes all guesswork — it tells us exactly what your vehicle needs.

Where to find your VIN:

  • On the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver's side
  • On the driver's side door jamb sticker
  • On your vehicle registration
  • On your insurance card
