Here are the key dimensions and identification points for common American manual transmissions used in performance and everyday vehicles.

T5 (FORD / GM LIGHT DUTY 5-SPEED): Configuration: 5-speed manual Overall length: ~27.5" Input shaft: 14-spline (Ford applications; GM T5 varies) Weight: ~85 lbs Applications: 1982–2010 Ford Mustang (with various small-blocks), early Camaro/Firebird, S10, and others Note: The T5 is a light-duty unit. The World Class T5 (introduced in the mid-1980s) is a stronger, more refined version. Not recommended for high-horsepower applications.

TREMEC TKO (TKO-500 / TKO-600): Configuration: 5-speed manual (performance) Overall length: ~30" Input shaft: 26-spline Weight: ~115 lbs Rating: TKO-500 up to 500 lb-ft; TKO-600 up to 600 lb-ft Applications: Aftermarket performance upgrade for Mustang, Camaro, and hot rods — uses same bellhousing bolt patterns as T5 in many configurations Note: The TKO is the preferred upgrade from a T5 in performance applications.

GM MUNCIE M21 / M22: Configuration: 4-speed manual (close-ratio M21, rock-crusher M22) Overall length: ~27" Input shaft: 26-spline Applications: 1963–1974 GM muscle cars (Camaro, Chevelle, Corvette, Nova, GTO, Firebird)

IDENTIFYING MUNCIE vs. OTHER GM 4-SPEEDS: • Count the bolts on the side cover: Muncie has 7 bolts on the side cover; Saginaw 4-speed has 9 bolts • The Muncie casting number is on the main case • M21 is the close-ratio version; M22 has stronger, louder gears ("rock crusher")
